Location
Built in 1771 by Sir Richard Arkwright Cromford Mills was the world's first successful water powered cotton spinning mill and a cornerstone of the Industrial Revolution.
Sir Richard Arkwright's invention of the cotton spinning machine, the water frame, revolutionised the cotton industry, transforming it from a small cottage industry to one of large scale factory production.
Arkwright became known as the 'Father of the Factory System' for launching the world's first production line. These ideas lead to the growth of hundreds of Arkwright style cotton mills across the country and by the early 1800s cotton was Britain's major import and export.
Today Cromford Mills is thriving visitor destination at the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills - a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Location
Cromford Mills is just a short drive from Derby and Matlock. Follow the A6 through the scenic Derbyshire countryside, passing charming villages like Ambergate.
Look for the brown heritage signs and turn onto Mill Lane and the historic mill buildings will appear on your left, with convenient on-site parking.
From Nottingham and the East Midlands, the drive via the A52 and A38 leads through beautiful landscapes straight to Cromford Mills.
